Volumul a apărut în urma unei decizii adoptate în anul 2010 în cadrul celui de-al XXI-lea Congres Mondial al Comitetului Internațional de Stiințe Istorice, organizat la Amsterdam. În acest context, Comisia Internațională de Demografie Istorică (ICHD) a decis ca, după jumătate de secol de existență, este necesară o lucrare care să sintetizeze nivelul atins de cercetarea în demografie istorică, la nivel mondial.
Autorii sunt specialiști consacrați, cu o bogată experiență în demografia istorică: Antoinette Fauve-Chamoux este conferențiar la Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales – Paris, Ioan Bolovan, profesor la Universitatea Babeș-Bolyai din Cluj, este actuaul președinte al ICHD, Sølvi Sogner a fost mai bine de două decenii profesor la Universitatea din Oslo.
